Sorean's Virtual Home

by on Jan.09, 2013, under Personal

Yes, title was on purpose.

Oh wow, a post!

I’m not dead yet, although from the state of these posts you might think I am.

We might have a venue picked, looked at the first one this past weekend, and if buying a house was any indication, it’s probably the one we end up with.

Trip back to Saskatoon in March to go Tux shopping with my best friend, being best man and all I kind of have to be there.

Christmas was pretty good, got an Order of the Stick board game, can’t wait to try it out.

The biggest news that I started a new job. I now work as an IT Consultant for a small firm here in Calgary, we’re only about 20 people, but it’s a great group to work with and the clients are pretty friendly to work with. The job essentially means that I’m the IT department for multiple companies. I handle everything from building servers, to web site design/maintenance, to phone activation/troubleshooting and everything in between. It’s pretty much my dream job. I enjoy the job, I enjoy the challenges of setting stuff up and it’s just rewarding. When I drive around I sometimes see client vehicles and think, I manage your network and keep you guys running smoothly 🙂

I really can’t be any happier with my life right now. Well win the lottery, money not being an issue any more will be awesome.

Edit: Remembered that my tournament volleyball team won our first tournament. Literally down to the third game and as close as you can get. Monday night team ended the fall season in 2nd. Tuesday dodgeball ended up 2nd. Wednesday dodgeball ended up 4th. Not a bad season over all. Really happy with Monday volleyball though, that’s out of 30 teams, regular season record of 20-4.

Same old same old

by on Jul.17, 2012, under Personal

Same old story, I suck at keeping constant updates going on. But it really boils down to me not scheduling time to do this on a regular basis. Or if I do, I forget about it with so much to do.

So what has happened since the beginning of May?

  • LAN party was a huge success. Awesome friends. Lots of gaming, generally all around good time.
  • My good friends Luke and Grace are now married, they’re such an awesome couple. Technology is so awesome. I was able to do their music for them for the whole night sitting from the dining area 🙂
  • Another bachelor party, this time for one of my best friends Lindsey. Paintballing and poker were in store for the night. Couldn’t get a hand to save my life, lost 40 bucks 😛
  • Yearly camping trip with Chrystal’s family, awesome people. Another little one on the way, this time to the childless uncle. That makes him the last one of Chrystal’s aunts/uncles on that side to be a dad/mom.
  • Been helping Lindsey build a deck this past week. It’s not bad, I’ll get a little progress album done soon.
Lindsey is getting married this weekend out on the way to Banff, destination wedding, sorta. It’s only an hour out of the city, but still it’s going to require an overnight stay there. Damn…. that sorta leaves me as the last one in my university friends circle to get married. Huh… good thing that’s next year.
Planning for that is going okay as well, we have the fall of 2013 picked, but not entirely sure when, or even where. I think picking a venue is the most difficult. Chrystal wants somewhere in nature, or naturesque and in Calgary that’s difficult, but outside it’s tricky for guests. Lots of time to plan, hopefully she and I can get it worked out nicely. If I have my way, it should be all done like a month before minus the minor things.
Well that’s it for now, I’ll put more up later.

Caution

by on Jun.18, 2012, under Jokes

I’m going to name my kid Caution. Why? So that people that know me will have a completely different mental picture when they hear the phrase, “He threw caution into the wind”.

PS. I will do a full update later.

It’s been a busy two months….

by on May.09, 2012, under Personal

So I was planning on more regular updates, but times at home get busy.

I have raided and stopped in ToR in the past 2 months. Lets put it this way, the guild lead and I don’t exactly see eye-to-eye on how to do things. There’s a set method of gear progression in the game. You get gear like this, 1.1 (Tionese), 1.2 (Columi),  and 1.3 (Rakatta). His logic has been lets do stuff to get 1.3 gear to do harder bosses that drop 1.3 gear. Instead of using 1.2 to get 1.3. I can kind of understand his logic about the gear making it a little easier, but it’s just not that logical. Either way, I’m pretty sure I’m done with MMO’s on the large scale now. WoW was great, but I don’t have the energy to do that again.

We’ve been bumped up in dodgeball leagues, we’re now in Tier A and it’s a little challenging. Definitely have to play harder and we have done better for the most part, but man the games are getting a little tougher. My right ring finger is perma-jammed. It is swollen all the time 😛 Also playing on a Thursday team now with a few new dodgeball friends. I have to admit, the community around the game is so fun and awesome. In the year and a half that I’ve been playing I’ve made more new friends than in the past 6 of volleyball.

Speaking of volleyball we’re in the winning tier of playoffs again. We’ve gone 17-2 in the last 2 rounds of round robin play. We won our first two games so now we can do no worse than 4th. But this is the closest we’ve come to first, fingers crossed we’ll get it.

So what has made my life so busy since the last post? Here are the events that have occurred in each of the consecutive weekends:

  • Helped my buddy Lindz move into his new house.
  • Empty weekend actually, not sure what ended up happening this weekend.
  • Birthday get together.
  • Out of town training, roommate opening for one of the biggest names in the trance world. Paul van Dyk, huge for him and he played an awesome set. If he ever puts something like that up, I’ll link it here. On this day at 4 AM after the show, I was awake for 23 of the past 24 hours.
  • Volleyball tournament, placed 2nd because we choked. It was one of those, “They didn’t win it, we lost it” situations.
  • Bachelor party (paintballing), separate birthday party afterwards for two other friends.

And for the weekends coming up, this is what is planned so far, again each point is a weekend:

  • Avengers movie night. Giving blood, haircut, hopefully a bit of relaxing.
  • LAN Party for Diablo 3. Having a bunch of friends over for a nerd weekend during the long weekend.
  • Wedding to attend.
  • Dodgeball tournament.

So yeah, it’s been a busy bit of time and the next few weeks are still as busy. Then later on there’s still another wedding to attend (which I’m in the wedding party of), so there’s another associated bachelor’s party.

Busy times, busy times indeed.

The average person

by on Feb.05, 2012, under Personal

will change careers 7 times in their life.

I heard this early in my life and thought that I wouldn’t be one of those statistics. Not only just in that regard, but towards almost everything in life. I don’t want to become some statistic, I don’t live normally, I don’t follow convention. I live my life diversely, do as much as I can, be as impactful in the lives of others as possible. No one ever remembers the average guy, the one who just fades into the background, the one who doesn’t say much. Do his/her job, go home, watch TV/read by themselves, go to bed, repeat. That’s not something I ever wanted to become.

At this point in my life I can honestly say that I honestly could not have imagined that my changed outlook on life would come to this point 11 years later. Engaged, own my own house, an amazing circle of friends, living a life of perfection. That said, I’m about 4 years behind on my 10 year plan when I left high school, sorta. My plan back then was set like this:

  • 18-21/22: Get my degree.
  • 22-25ish: Move to the states and make money to pay off student loans and to build up a chunk and move back to Saskatoon.
  • 25: Get married.
  • 27: Have first kid.
Everything after that was unplanned. But that is what I had planned when I was 18. What kind of 18-year old has his life planned already? Sometimes I feel older than my age, or as the phrase goes, “wise beyond my years”. And now that I have the luxury of a great life so far, I feel that I can “regress” if you will and just enjoy what I can, do what I want and not worry about everything.
There is only one thing that I do wish for, and I think a lot of people wish for this as well. To be freed from the burden of financial insecurity. Sure my job pays well, I have a contract gig that helps supplement my income so that I can enjoy the lifestyle I have, but to win the lottery and be able to spend time traveling, exploring, enjoying everything the world has to offer would be phenomenal. But those are dreams that everyone has.

Busy Month

by on Jan.31, 2012, under Personal

Okay so I failed a little bit at the weekly updates, but it’s been a pretty busy month.

So I got engaged mentioned in the previous post, volleyball started up again, and 2 dodgeball teams. And also The Old Republic takes up the rest of the spare time. So far things have been going pretty good.

I dropped my second volleyball team in favour of a dodgeball one because I just could not stand one of the players. He just…. doesn’t try hard enough I find. It was frustrating because he is a player that goes to camps and doesn’t get better. He plays his defensive position wrong, I’ve tried suggesting to him to change where he stands so that he can be better defensively, but he still makes the same mistakes over and over. That said though, all the other players try, they have fun, but this guy is just a bit of a killjoy too. Ah well though, ended up on a dodgeball team on the same night so I’m still keeping active on that night.  That second night is less intense for sure.

I also started a bit of a challenge that a friend put up. 1 push up, per day, accumulating through the year. I did a test at the beginning of the year, 14 push-ups before I had to stop. As of this morning, 20 before I had to take a break. It’s been getting a little harder for the past week or so, eventually I’ll have to put more time into it, but I think it’s going to help out in the end. I just wish I could lose the gut. It really is my own personal biggest sore spot. It jiggles 😛

No new track this time, but you get this instead. One of the teammates has started recording videos and attached is the highlights vid of the first game. Note my fast hands @ 1:55. Duck Dodgers Game 1 Highlights.
